RESS-ELV: Advanced Cultural Math and Language
This virtual residency component explores advanced lessons in math, language, cultural studies, and history. Participants engage with the materials by practicing lessons for older children and preparing lesson plans, demonstrations, and exams.

The upper elementary online residency covers:

- Advanced cultural and history, classified nomenclature, and the integration of physical geography with political geography, introducing concepts of migration and conflict
- Advanced math studies, divisibility, square root studies, cubing, simple interest, ratio, proportion, including algebraic equations and inequalities, and integers, traditional, geometric, and algebraic decanomial
- Advanced language studies focuses on mastering language arts instruction for children ages 9–12. Participants learn to present advanced grammar concepts and sentence analysis while scaffolding complex writing processes—including multi-paragraph drafting, editing strategies, and expressive writing across academic disciplines.
- Discussions, lectures, and demonstrations include lesson practice and art integration.
Material-Making Workshops
Discussions cover the importance of creating handmade, well-constructed materials and identifying areas of the learning environment that need supplemental materials.
Art Integration
Art integration, language, cultural, and math extensions into art, material-making workshops, and practice with the materials are integrated into lessons throughout the residency.

Mary Beth Gelsleichter
Instructor
As a long-time instructor at Montessori Live, Mary-Beth guides adult learners through advanced online mathematics courses and hands-on summer residency training. She is a certified AMS teacher for Elementary I-II and earned a Master of Arts in Education in 1998 from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA.
