SCHOOL LEADER CERTIFICATE

The School Leadership Path is our most popular program for administrators, board members, and support educators to understand Montessori pedagogy and methodology for the private and public sectors. This program features a four-course concentration designed to give school administrators a sense of what is necessary to lead or support Montessori programs, as well as a broad understanding of the curriculum scope and sequence from early childhood through the middle school years. This program is open to anyone interested in taking a leadership role or support role in a Montessori environment.

Foundational Courses (8 weeks) (self-paced, virtual)

  • Foundations of Montessori Philosophy (FDN)
  • Observation and Classroom Management (OBS)

Curriculum Course (16 weeks) (virtual)

  • Survey of Montessori Curriculum (SMCU)
  • Practical Applications for Administrators (PRAA) (prerequisites FDN, OBS, SMCU)

The online courses consist of weekly chats, video lectures, forum reflection postings, assigned readings, and assignments. You can expect to spend 7-10 per week on each course. Courses may be taken individually for professional or personal development in Montessori education or as part of a Montessori Leadership professional development certificate program. Adult learners will receive a Montessori Live course completion certificate after each course and a final Montessori Live certificate upon completion of the program.

Description of Courses

The Foundations of Montessori Philosophy course introduces participants to the philosophy and history of the Montessori movement.  Participants will read a biography of Maria Montessori’s life to learn more about her as a leader and a human being. FDN is offered multiple times during the year.

The Observation and Classroom Management course focuses on the art and science of observation.  The course also focuses on classroom management strategies for an individualized, multi-age, constructivist classroom environment.  It also focuses on the strengths and challenges of a team-teaching partnership model.

The Survey of Montessori Curriculum course takes 15 weeks to provide an overview of the Montessori curriculum and materials for ages 3 to 12.  Participants will learn about various aspects of the curriculum, such as practical life and sensorial, math operations, geometry, fractions, and algebra, as well as the language scope and sequence.  The Montessori cultural sequence will also be covered in detail.

The Practical Applications for Administrators course is designed as a practicum for our professional development program.  We will discuss administrative topics, including supporting faculty, parents, and students, and delve into what is necessary to be an effective leader.

The Practical Applications for Administrators course is designed as a practicum for our professional development program.  We will discuss administrative topics, including supporting faculty, parents, and students, and delve into what is necessary to be an effective leader.

The Practicum for Administrators extends the Practical Applications online course and adds 700 clock hours of supervised, in-person practicum experience.  Participants will be working in their local school environment as they continue the leadership project they began in the PRAA course.  PRADM runs during the academic school year and includes at least two virtual observations.  In addition, there is one required in-person observation in which the Montessori Live Practicum course instructor must visit the school site.  Travel costs, daily rate, and per diem are not included in the tuition.

The capstone for this program is the Residency for Administrators.  MACTE certification requires a 40-hour, in-person residency experience to be part of the diploma program.  RESADM topics include: leadership principles, personal and professional growth, equity, cultural responsiveness, ethics, faculty and staff support, policy implementation, community engagements, finances and fundraising, marketing and enrollment, educational law and governance, and strategic planning.  Participants will also be observing at local Montessori schools.

The Residency for Administrators covers the following standards: leadership principles, personal and professional growth, equity, inclusiveness, and cultural responsiveness, ethics, onboarding, management, and support of faculty and staff, Montessori philosophy and curriculum, implement and develop systems, policies, and procedures that support high faculty and staff, and community engagement, finances, fundraising, marketing, enrollment and retention, governance, straegic planning plus valuable interactions with fellow administrators.

It takes between 1 and 2 years to complete the program. Each online course consists of weekly chats, video lectures, forum reflection postings, assigned readings, and assignments. You can expect to spend 5-10 per week on each course. The enrollment process is streamlined and straightforward.

Past Participant Comments

I found the Survey course to be unbelievably valuable. I learned more than I knew I could in just one course. I don’t recommend any changes to this class. J.V.

This program was wonderful. After every chat, video lecture, or reading, I would walk into work with a deeper understanding of the Montessori philosophy and began to look forward to seeing the classrooms, educators, and students with a new set of “eyes” and gratitude. I also enjoyed working within a community of other administrators and found it comforting to be with others who also faced similar challenges. The instructor helped foster a sense of community across time zones! K.M.

I found the course extremely helpful, providing me with the tools I need to understand the Montessori method.   The instructor was knowledgeable and always available to help and support me during this course. I found the chat forum a great way to communicate and learn from my colleagues. W.L.

Past participants include principals of both public and private Montessori schools, as well as specialist educators and secondary faculty. These adult learners have expressed gratitude for their participation in the course.  In particular, district principals who have transferred into a Montessori program report renewed confidence in leading their school community as they work with experienced Montessori faculty and parents.  Directors of early childhood programs report a new understanding of how to prepare their students for entering a Montessori elementary program. Specialists, such as music, art, physical education, office administration, and pupil support personnel (ESE and ESOL staff), express an enhanced ability to support students and integrate their specialty into the general education curriculum.

Graduates Had This To Say ....

Dr. Kym Elder challenged us to delegate and foster leadership capacity within our schools. Letting go was the biggest challenge for me, and it produced the most incredible surprises. I saw the inner forces at work in others that I never imagined were there. As an unintended consequence, I discovered newness and purpose within me. It never really is about doing more. It’s about doing things together from within us. T.J., IA
We were so fortunate to have Dr. Kym Elder facilitate our learning throughout this past year. Kym truly put us all at the center of this experience. She gave us valuable and actionable feedback to apply to every experience as we move forward to accomplish all we set out to do. The flame is burning brightly, and we have so much good to do in this world. M.H., NY
