FDN: Foundations of Montessori Philosophy
This course covers the life of Dr. Maria Montessori and her inclusion with the an Educational Reform point of view, beginning with Pestalozzi, Rousseau, and Piaget.
OBS: Observation, Management, and Child Development
This course reflects on the art and science of observation, a critical part of any Montessori learning environment. Actual Montessori learning environments are highlighted in action.
PRED: Educator Practicum
This course consists of two components. The online class runs from Sept-Mar. The teaching internship is completed at your approved location from Sept-May. The course closes June 30th.
Language
LNPH: Language – Phonics, Spelling, & Punctuation
This course covers presentations introducing the study of phonics (English), spelling, syllabication, affixes, and punctuation.
LNCE: Correct Expression, Handwriting, Whole Language
This course covers the development of oral language and correct expression in young children as well as instruction on beginning handwriting skills using Montessori metal inset and sandpaper letters.
LNGR: Grammar Materials and Sentence Analysis
This course covers the first study of grammar for elementary students using the Montessori symbol and grammar box materials. Also included are lectures on sentence analysis.
Math
MTNU: Numeration and the Decimal System
This course covers the introduction to math for early childhood and elementary students in a Montessori setting. Simple counting and skip counting using Montessori materials are highlighted.
MTOP: Operations with Whole Numbers
This course covers presentations on the Montessori materials for addition and multiplication. Materials for operations and memorization are demonstrated.
MTEC: Mathematics for Early Childhood
This course covers early childhood level presentations on the Montessori materials for subtractions and division, fractions, geometry.
MTAO: Advanced Operations with Whole Numbers
This course covers presentations on the Montessori materials for subtraction and division. Materials for operations and memorization are demonstrated.
MTGM: Introduction to Geometry
This course covers visual discrimination of two and three-dimensional forms, the beginning study of lines, angles, polygons, and circles as well as perimeter, area, and volume using Montessori geometry materials.
MTFR: Fractions and Decimals
This course covers presentation with the Montessori materials on fraction equivalency, operations with fractions, and an introduction to decimal fractions.
MTAL: Decimals and Introduction to Algebra
This course covers presentations of the Montessori materials of decimals, percentages, and introduces algebra with presentations on squaring. The prerequisite course is MTFR.
Cultural
CBPU: Big Picture of the Universe
This course covers the story of the universe and study of astronomy for elementary children. The unit includes lectures introducing chemical elements.
CEHS: Cultural Studies – Earth History and the Story of Life, Human Civilization
This cultural course presents the Story of Life, including the Timeline of Earth History and Timeline of Life. The Kingdoms of Life introduces scientific classification and nomenclature, Physical and Political Geography, Imaginary Island studies, and the Timeline of Humans.
Leadership
SMCU: Survey of Montessori Curriculum
This course will support school leaders of public and private Montessori programs to become more familiar with the curriculum scope and sequence from early childhood through upper elementary.
PRAA: Practical Applications for Administrators
This course is designed for school administrators and instructional leaders who are not working directly in the Learning Environment. The course prerequisites are FDN, OBS, and SMCU.
PRADM: Practicum for Administrators
This course will satisfy the requirements for our new School Leader Diploma program. Participants will be working at their school locations.
RESADM: Residency for Administrators
We will hold the Administrator Residency in Birmingham, Alabama. This 5-day, 40 clock-hour class will satisfy requirements for our School Leader Diploma program.
